What Is a Prop Firm (Proprietary Trading Firm)?
A proprietary trading firm (“prop firm”) provides traders with access to a pool of capital in exchange for a share of the profits generated. In the traditional sense, prop firms hired traders directly, gave them access to firm capital, and took a percentage of the returns.
The modern retail prop firm model works differently. Instead of hiring traders as employees, they evaluate traders through a structured challenge process and grant funded access to those who pass. The trader never risks the firm’s capital during the evaluation: they trade on a demo (simulated) account. If they pass, they’re granted a funded simulated account and receive a percentage of the profits they generate.
Are Prop Firm Accounts Real Money?
This is the most important question to answer clearly, and it’s one that a lot of prop firm marketing glosses over.
The short answer: the accounts are simulated (demo). The profit splits are real payouts.
